Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Justice Reinvestment Initiative a response to the recent economic downturn?

No. The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) launched the Justice Reinvestment Initiative (JRI) in 2006. In recent years, the Pew Center on the States and BJA have separately supported justice reinvestment and similar approaches to corrections and sentencing issues and have aligned their efforts in this initiative. While JRI is not directly responsive to our current economic climate, the core principles of collaboration, identifying cost drivers, analyzing relevant criminal justice data, and using evidence-based practices to increase public safety with dwindling budgets are more important than ever.
