Frequently Asked Questions

Who pays for Justice Reinvestment Initiative technical assistance?

The Justice Reinvestment Initiative is funded by a Congressional appropriation (Omnibus Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2010 (P.L. 111-117)), BJA discretionary funding, and The Pew Center on the States. States and local community sites are encouraged to invest some of their own resources and to work with the technical assistance provider for guidance on how to partner with other funders, including private foundations and the federal government.

The Pew Center on the States and the Bureau of Justice Assistance are closely coordinating their efforts in this initiative and, in some cases, Pew may provide additional funding to selected state sites.
