Frequently Asked Questions

What can my state/local/tribal community do to increase its chances of being selected for participation in the Justice Reinvestment Initiative (JRI)?

Several factors increase the likelihood that a state, locality, or tribal authority will be selected for participation in the Justice Reinvestment Initiative (JRI). Some important factors are:

  • Demonstrated cooperation of leaders and a willingness to explore reform in a nonpartisan manner;
  • Demonstrated dedication to collecting and analyzing criminal justice system data and using that information as the basis for policy reforms;
  • Demonstrated willingness to invest local resources in the process and/or implementation of reforms; and
  • Demonstrated ability and history to effect large systems change.
