About the Program:

The City of Revere is located approximately 5 miles from downtown Boston and has a population of 51,755. It is situated in eastern Massachusetts (Suffolk County) and borders Winthrop, East Boston, and Chelsea to the south; Everett and Malden to the west; Saugus and Lynn to the north; and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. Revere comprises 10 square miles, of which 4.1 miles are open water and 5.9 miles is developed land.

With FY 2012 JAG grant funding, the Revere Police Department hired a part-time Community Resource Coordinator. Specifically, the Community Resource Coordinator serves as a liaison between the Police Department and the Mayor’s Office addressing public safety issues and complaints by residents and business owners, in order to facilitate increased communication.

The City of Revere, in partnership with the Revere Police Department, had determined that public safety issues within the "Broadway" and central business district area of the city were a priority and needed to be addressed. In recent years public safety issues have increased in these areas and local business owners, as well as residents, have expressed a fear of crime and the need for a police presence. With public safety issues in the Broadway/central business district area in mind, the Community Resource Coordinator was hired. Even though this program has been recently implemented, it has already had a positive impact in the community. The coordinator, along with a recently assigned community services officer, has surveyed over 300 businesses in order to create a database of the issues concerning that community. The data created with this survey will also be used to send out a monthly public safety newsletter. The coordinator has assisted in facilitating neighborhood watch meetings and has worked with the department on planning other events such public safety ward meetings with City Councilors. The coordinator is also working on curriculum for a Citizen Police Academy, as well as a neighborhood and business crime watch program, an elderly/disabled watch program, and new citizen public safety meetings.

Program Successes/Effect on the Community:

The city along with the police department is currently working on the opening of a neighborhood station in the Broadway/central business district, and the Revere Police Department Community Resource Coordinator will be working from that facility to better serve the residents of Revere. The Revere Police Department Community Resource Coordinator Program provides Revere residents with a better understanding of the mission and overall operations of the Revere Police Department, which in turn works to enhance the department's relationship/partnership with the community to create a safer and more secure city.
