About the Program:

Georgia’s Criminal Justice Coordinating Council, the State Administering Agency for Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance (JAG) Grant, partnered with the Georgia Council on Criminal Justice Reform to expend the State’s Byrne JAG funds on timely and pressing reentry issues in the state. The funds have allowed the Governor’s Office of Transition, Support, and Reentry to engage a nationally-known public policy consultant and hire additional staff to formulate a strategic plan that maps out the State’s current reentry projects. The consultant lends his expertise to building the State’s reentry networks to effectively coordinate and implement effective reentry practices statewide. An evaluation of these practices provides continual analytic feedback and determines the program's effect on recidivism rates. The State of Georgia’s Byrne JAG funds have been, in the, past largely used to fund the State’s multijurisdictional drug task forces. The funding of this program, in addition to forthcoming initiatives, represents Georgia's interest in broadening the current project scope to include other priorities aligned with best practices and forward-thinking criminal justice policy.

Program Successes/Effect on the Community:

Having the flexibility in using Byrne funds to supplement the State’s reentry priorities has provided for a more focused reentry strategy and evaluation. Byrne funds also allow the State to track more longitudinal metrics to gauge the success and efficacy of myriad reentry efforts currently in place.
