About the Program:

The five police departments that comprise the South Central Connecticut Traffic Team and the South Central Regional SWAT Team aggregated their 2014 JAG allocations to purchase an evidence collection vehicle. The vehicle, which cost $97,972 serves the Branford, East Haven, Madison, North Branford, and North Haven police departments.

The evidence collection vehicle is available to all five departments for crime scene investigations, as well as deployment by the South Central Connecticut Traffic Team during the investigation of fatal motor vehicle crashes. The Traffic Team, along with the SWAT Team, serve an estimated total population of 136,337 over 163 square miles within New Haven County.

Program Successes/Effect on the Community:

The regionalization of specialized police services yields operational efficiencies, enhanced response capabilities, and cost savings for the five communities involved. The purchase of this vehicle enhances law enforcement's ability to process crime scenes created from violent events and fatal motor vehicle collisions.

Prior to the purchase of this vehicle, critical evidence collection tools were not centralized. This evidence collection vehicle provides a mobile work area that is temperature controlled and out of the elements. The vehicle also provides the ability to use computers directly linked to internal police databases that facilitate electronic evidence tracking and labeling. These on-scene benefits will contribute to a better overall evidence collection process.

From a broader perspective, it presents fiscal responsibility from these five police departments through asset sharing and professional collaboration.
