About the Program:

The Gerald “Tex” Fox Justice Center is a tribal corrections facility located on the Fort Berthold Reservation in New Town, North Dakota.

The Juvenile Corrections facility contracts with other North Dakota and South Dakota reservations to provide services to tribally enrolled youth from any community. In addition to corrections, the justice center also provides education and counseling opportunities for juveniles.

On average, about 15 juveniles are in and out of the justice center each month.

Program Successes/Effect on the Community:

Prior to their incarceration, some juveniles at the center have experienced abuse or neglect, or they’ve been witness to larger crimes.

In many cases, these juveniles are subjected to additional forensic interviews on sensitive topics. There is a special interview room at the justice center that allows these interviews to take place in a more comfortable setting.

With the funding allocated through the JAG program, officials at the justice center installed a closed circuit recording device in 2015 that allows outside agencies to record audio and video of any interviews that take place. By interviewing juveniles on site at the justice center, instead of sending them to an unfamiliar office building or other law enforcement facility, they are more comfortable and may be more willing to be truthful and open in giving information to investigators.

Officials at the justice center have also made the interview room available to outside agencies in need of a confidential place to hold sensitive interviews.
