About the Program:

Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) Training is a national initiative recognized for self-defense training. This program focuses on education and awareness, as well as teaching participants vital self-defense tactics and techniques to protect themselves in the event of an attack.

In 2015, funding from the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program was used to support RAD Training at Santa Fe College in Alachua County, Florida. This training program was free and available to the general community, as well as to the college’s students and staff. JAG funds were used to provide reimbursement of overtime costs associated with RAD-certified deputies to conduct the trainings.

Program Successes/Effect on the Community:

RAD classes consist of three 4-hour sessions. From October 2014 to September 2015, the RAD program at Santa Fe College trained more than 200 participants. Once the program was completed, program directors received numerous responses from participants regarding how they believed the program was beneficial.

One participant stated, “This class of mostly submissive females was transformed into informed and ready women.”

Another participant responded, “All the women who attended this class with me on April 7, 15, and 16 were outstanding and I could see their confidence build. All said they were so thankful to have attended.”

RAD Training was first offered at the college in 2012. Since then, there have been 573 participants in the program, according to program officials.
