NEW! Changing Racial Composition of 3 States' Prison Populations

BJA and the Council of State Governments Justice Center released "In Brief: Examining the Changing Racial Composition of Three States' Prison Populations," which examines data from three states that have employed a Justice Reinvestment approach and found that their subsequent drops in prison admissions and/or prison populations were especially pronounced among nonwhite populations.

South Carolina has saved $12.5 million while increasing public safety. Kentucky's pretrial reforms have saved counties roughly $25 million. North Carolina's prison population decreased almost 5.6 percent between December 2011 and June 2013.
